Kattumana Thozhil (Construction Industry) – A brief history

To learn and get educated in one’s own mother tongue is a lot easier and faster than doing the same through a foreign language. This very fact and also the reality that there were no any periodicals in Tamil for the construction industry till the year 2000 were the two justifiable factors to start one in Tamil and thus was born Kattumana Thozhil, the pioneer construction industry journal in Tamil. Also Kattumana Thozhil is the first vernacular construction industry journal in India.

Success factors.
To run an industry oriented journal in a vernacular language is such a risks-ridden task that it can be ventured upon only by a rare few. Sindhu Baskar did venture upon it and has been successfully running it for the past 21 and odd years since the year 2000. He is the editor and publisher of Kattumana Thozhil.

Kattumana Thozhil is now a household magazine among scores of builders, architects, engineers and the student community belonging to construction industry in Tamil Nadu. Several factors can be quoted as consistent contributors for the successful running of the magazine up until now.

Perfect journalistic approach in presentation of articles, data, information and interviews covering all areas of construction industry in a sublime and error-free nature remains to be the principal contributing factor for the success of the magazine.

The editorial page written by its social conscious editor S. Sindhu Baskar remains to be the next attractive factor to retain and widen the readership base for the journal. (One of his editorials prescribing codes of conduct for the college students was kept pasted on the notice board of Anna University for a longer period). Many prestigious organizations such as Tamil Nadu Tree Growers and Farmers Welfare Association joined hands with Lions Clubs and Rotary Districts and has been distributing the Photostat copies of the editorials among the public, particularly the student community as a social awareness campaign continuously. This is a special pride for a vernacular magazine indeed.

The patronage being extended by its readers comprising all sections of construction industry, several associations promoting the industry and the general public by way of their subscriptions and the advertisement support given by the corporate houses in the industry keep bolstering the magazine throughout the period since its inception.

Every year since 2012 an award distribution ceremony namely ‘Construction Industry Award is being conducted by us. The honorable Governor of Tamil Nadu, His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah has been the chief guest at the function all these years. The awardees galore comprised industry stalwarts and corporate firms and home loan institutions that contributed for the growth of the industry through a variety of their peerless services.

The heads of all associations for engineers, architects, builders and students formed part of the august gathering that had assembled to witness the function that was held in one of Chennai’s prestigious auditoriums, namely
The Music Academy. That the function was the talk of the town on the day of the function is no way an
